Cape Town International Airport Information

General Airport Information Cape Town International Airport is the second busiest in South Africa and the third busiest on the continent, after OR Tambo and Cairo. The airport is located about 22 kilometers from the city and is easily accessible through airport shuttles, taxis and other transport options. History Cape Town International Airport was first launched in 1954 and replaced the Wingfield Aerodrome. It was originally called D.F. Malan Airport and offered only two international flights. After apartheid ended in the 90s, ownership of the Cape Town International Airport was reassigned from the state to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). It was then that the name was changed to Cape Town International Airport. The airport was renovated extensively in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has subsequently won several awards for the quality of facilities and staff service – including the Skytrax award for Best Airport in Africa, in 2012 and 2013. Infrastructure According to statistics from 2012, the airport sees passenger traffic of over 8.5 million each year and has a capacity for 14.5 million passengers. There are over 95,000 aircraft movements per year, to and from the airport, connecting to major international destinations as well as cities around South Africa. Some airlines that operate from Cape Town International Airport include: Air Botswana, Air Namibia, Air France, Air Mauritius, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa, Condor, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Edelweiss Air, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Airlines Several domestic airlines like Airlink, Comair, Kulula.com, Mango and South African Airways also operate extensively from Cape Town. Services Cape Town International Airport has all essential amenities and facilities for passengers including lounges, eateries, bars, foreign exchange kiosks, ATMs, retail stores, medical outlets, internet services etc. It also offers affordable shuttle services to and from multiple locations within Cape Town. The airport also offers an exclusive facility for business jets at the southern end of the primary runway.
